How we reached it

Arc 170 returned after weeks (the detour to close it and unblock telemetry proper), and the stretch was one long rebirth. Stdio was hand-rolled: spawn_service_peer (src/services/peer.rs) — a bespoke actor loop with a HashMap<ThreadId, ReplySender> routing table + a Rust-internal ServiceMsg::{Req,Register,Deregister} enum, three hand-authored Std*Service/handle fns + Req/Rep structs, a freeze bootstrap holding *_ctrl senders. We reborn it, stone by stone: Phase 1 — the three streams as defservices (StdOut/StdErr/StdIn, the fd held in :ephemeral, born inside :init from a pure fd-number seed via the whitelisted from-fd — the impurity sequestered where it belongs); the flip — the five caller verbs (readln/println/pprintln/eprintln/epprintln) routed to the primes, names + kernel namespace unchanged, a pure impl-swap; write-batched — an oversized write fragments to fit the budget instead of failing (a program’s own output isn’t a self-DoS); EOF became a matchable ::Eof value, not a loop-killing panic; the crash cause surfaced, not swallowed; and finally Phase 3 — the hand-rolled path annihilated (−541 lines: spawn_service_peer, the ReplyRegistry, the old handle fns, stdout.wat/stderr.wat, the *_ctrl bootstrap) and the ' names reclaimed (stdout-svc'→stdout-svc, StdOut'→StdOut) by a recorded codemod. What it is — the most primordial streams, reborn behind the service model

Three faces, one rising.

• The builder’s principle, made literal for the most fundamental resources. “A service is the holder of a protected resource; std{in,out,err} are protected resources.” The fd — the protected thing — now lives in a service’s :ephemeral, born inside :init from a pure seed, and callers reach it by dialing. Stdio, the oldest abstraction in the system, made to obey the newest, cleanest law. • “Life has only just begun.” This rebirth is not the destination — it is the unblocking. Closing 170’s stdio was the whole point of the detour: telemetry proper (the log channel the swallowed-cause reckoning waits on) is the next life. The Phoenix does not rise to rest; it rises to fly.
