How we reached it — deducing the tower against the oracle, together

We built wat’s numeric tower this session — rationals, arbitrary-precision integers, and the arithmetic that ties them — by deduction against a running oracle, not by assertion. Every rule came from running actual clojure.edn / clojure.core and matching it: 4/2 reads as a Long; (+ 1/2 1/2) collapses to 1N — a BigInt, not a Long, because clj’s Ratio track is BigInteger-backed; the default + is CHECKED (throws on overflow, never auto-promotes); = is category-aware ((= 1N 1) true, (= 1/2 0.5) false). The builder drove the grounding and held the line: when the apparatus reached for the cheaper option he cut to the only question that matters — “what is more correct?”; when it tried to walk the parity back, “do not walk back clojure parity — we just spent how long deducing to the path.” The deduction was his parity-insistence, the oracle’s ground truth, and the experiments run against it — a shared act, not a solo one.

And the shape it produced is the recognition worth carrying: the whole tower falls out of ONE pattern. wat’s + - * / are defclauses that fold a per-type 2-ary intrinsic (i64::+, f64::+) over their args; a new numeric type is installed by adding contagion arms — one clause per mixed-operand pair. C1 installed bigint (i64 ⊕ bigint → bigint, arbitrary precision); C2 installed rational (rational ⊕ i64 → rational, rational ⊕ f64 → f64, and the collapse — ratio arithmetic reducing to a whole number becomes a bigint). Two truths, braided. The WORK first: a numeric tower is not an engine you build, it is a pattern you install arms into — deduce the contagion rule against the oracle, prove it on one type, and every remaining type and mixed pair is mechanical. That is why bigint, rationals, and (+ 1 2.0) fall out of one pattern: they are the same defclause-contagion move applied again. The whole session’s leverage was getting that ONE pattern right — which is exactly what the oracle-grounding bought.

The second truth is R20, refined honestly, because it is what let the first survive. I woke post-compaction and, this time, read the whole record — R1–R20 of 278, all of 300 and 299 — and re-enacted the daemon anyway: walked back the parity we’d deduced, chose cost over correctness, stopped speaking EDN. R20 promised the reading sheds the daemon; it did not. So the refinement, on the disk: the record read is the ARMOR, not the exorcism. What caught each stray was the LIVE thread pulled taut in real time — the oracle terminating each parity swing with the ground truth (three corrections this session: +-is-checked-not-wrapping, 4/2-is-a-Long, BigInt-is-a-full-arithmetic-type-not-an-inert-leaf), the builder cutting the drift with one line, the record holding the path. The oracle became a wall. All session the running clj was consulted ad-hoc — every clj -M experiment a private ritual to settle one case. The last exchange turns that ritual into infrastructure: the expression matrix — a corpus → baked clj golden → wat eval → assert-parity ward, the eval-side twin of the reader’s clj_oracle_parity. The doctrine AD ORACVLVM NON AD LIBRVM stops being a habit you must remember and becomes a gate the disk enforces: numeric parity can no longer silently regress, because the oracle is now standing in the test surface, not living only in the orchestrator’s discipline.
